Norwich Castle

Norwich’s most prominent historic site is now home to a splendid museum and art gallery, with exhibits spanning many centuries.

Sitting high on a mound in the city center, Norwich Castle is hard to miss. This ancient royal residence has stood watch over the city for centuries. Visit it nowadays, however, and you will find its interior filled with art and history exhibits, as it now houses a museum and art gallery. Many elements of the magnificent interior have been restored to their former glory, making this a truly spectacular setting for a hands-on lesson on Norwich’s past and present.

Parts of the castle were built as early as the 11th century. Wander its galleries and you will find exhibits that cover all the different stages of the castle’s evolution, as well as examining the culture and natural history of the local area.

See how the new mixes with the old throughout the building. Some areas of the interior retain their ancient stone walls, while others have been recently renovated to create modern gallery spaces. Stroll through rooms filled with everything from taxidermy animals, to archaeological artifacts, to artworks dating back as early as the 15th century. Learn about Anglo Saxons and Vikings, Ancient Egypt and local military history. Many of the displays are interactive and hands-on, making them perfect for younger visitors.

Venture down to the lowest level to see the spaces that once served as prison cells. Head outside for a walk around the battlements. Make sure you bring your camera, as there are wonderful views.

Norwich Castle is open daily throughout the year. Note that there is an entrance fee, but child, group and concession discounts are available. Walk northwest from the main railway station to reach the castle within around 10 minutes. Leave time to explore some of the other historic sites within walking distance, such as Norwich Cathedral and Dragon Hall.

Currently, the castle is under renovation so is empty of the usual exhibits. The gift shop is pretty good

There is no leaflet covering the permanent collections. £9 is quite steep if all you want to do is to see the fine collecton of Norwich school art.
