One of Utah’s oldest parks has long been enjoyed by residents and visitors for its heritage charm, spacious lawns, tranquil lake and sports grounds.

Explore the pretty grounds of Liberty Park, a public park in southeastern Salt Lake City dating back to 1882. With 100 acres (40 hectares) of inner-city space, Liberty Park is one of Salt Lake City’s largest parks and contains a range of heritage landmarks, public facilities and exciting seasonal events. Stroll along the park’s walking paths, play tennis or volleyball, check out the aviary or rent a paddleboat at the edge of the lake.

To experience the park’s varying scenery, enter via its northern or southern main gates and follow the 1.5-mile (2.4-kilometer) wood-chip path looping around the grounds. This path is popular with walkers, joggers and cyclists. At the park’s southern end, find the Tracy Aviary. It has been open to the public since 1938 and features 135 species of birds, some of which are endangered. Visit nearby Liberty Lake and go for a ride on the paddleboats.

Check out the mid-19th-century Isaac Chase Mill, Utah’s oldest remaining commercial building. Visit the Chase Home Museum of Utah Folk Arts and discover the craft, music and dance of Utah’s historic communities. In warmer months, join locals for a traditional outdoor Sunday get-together. Drum circles, music ensembles and dance groups regularly perform all day during these weekly community events.

Bring a picnic or some food to grill and eat at picnic tables. Kids can explore the playgrounds or play in the park’s Seven Canyons Fountain in summer. This fountain was designed to represent Utah’s Jordan River and its tributaries. Enjoy the flowers throughout the park that come from the central greenhouse.

Get some exercise with a game of tennis, volleyball, basketball or bocce at Liberty Park’s sports facilities. The park also has a swimming pool.

Liberty Park is located southeast of downtown Salt Lake City and is a 30-minute bus ride from Central Station. Find parking on the adjacent streets. The park and the Chase Home Museum are free to visit however, some of the park’s other attractions have admission fees.
