Barcelona Aquarium

Barcelona Aquarium

Discover the fascinating underwater world of the local Spanish coastline at this popular hands-on aquarium.

Barcelona Aquarium’s main area of specialisation is the marine habitats of the Mediterranean, which brings a uniquely local interest to many of its exhibits. The indigenous habitats are displayed in a series of thirteen tanks which utilise the latest technology to closely resemble the real thing. Navigation follows a clearly marked route with information in English, Spanish and Catalan, so you can read all about the fascinating creatures that live around the nearby coastline.Of course no aquarium would be complete without its share of “big fish”, and there are plenty of sharks and stingrays to watch as they glide silently through the waters of the Oceanarium, flanked by colourful tropical fish. A special tunnel allows you to walk directly under the shark tank for a daring close-up view of these graceful but deadly predators. The amusing antics of the penguins in the cold-water habitats of Planeta Aqua will keep everyone happy for hours on end. Other tanks contain exotic tropical specimens from some of the world’s most beautiful coral reefs, including the famous Great Barrier Reef of Australia.Youngsters are specially catered for in the Explora exhibit, which features over fifty interactive activities ranging from a trip through a replica submarine to using a microscope to examine mud samples.Barcelona Aquarium is in the Port Vell district near the harbour, just a short walk from Las Ramblas and the city’s main shopping and restaurant quarters. It is open every day, but opening times vary so it’s best to check the website before setting off. Good public transport links include bus, tram or metro. Admission is by reasonably priced ticket, and you can jump the queues by pre-purchasing from the website, which also offers discounts and other special deals.

4/5 - Good

Enjoyed the penguins and a few surprises in the small tanks. Plenty for kids to do. Enough information to read but not overwhelming. Two hours for complete visit. Park outside for youngsters and an area to sit in the sun and good views of buildings within the area.

Takes a couple of hours to really view everything. Penguins a delight to watch. Some surprises in the small tanks. Lots for kids to do, even a small park area outside.

2/5 - Disappointing

Verified traveller

Not the best, wouldn't bother wasting 20 euros.
