What you can expect

Embark on an early morning trip from Barcelona to Montserrat Monastery located on a sacred mountain not far outside of the city. Visit the monastery as well as the museum to learn about the rich cultural heritage of Catalonia. Then look at the Black Madonna kept inside the Royal Basilica.

Meet your friendly, bilingual guide at “Estación de Francia”, at Av. del Marquès de l'Argentera, 6. After a warm greeting, set off inland towards Montserrat Monastery. An hour ride through the Catalonian countryside flashes by in no time and before long, you arrive at the train station. From here, you will do the last part of the trip by train. Enjoy the second part of the ascent to the mountain on the rack railway. It was built at the end of the 19th century to improve access to the sanctuary for devotees and pilgrims to the monastery.

The first impression is always the most important, and this one won’t disappoint you. The monastery is built into the side of a mountain whose shape is quite distinct. Pause a moment to appreciate the jagged backdrop for this sacred place. Continue to the heart of the monastery where you have ample time to explore the complex’s many buildings. Learn about local culture and history inside of the museum and see the Black Madonna in the Royal Basilica.

The architecture, which combines Gothic and Renaissance styles, is well-designed and suits its surroundings perfectly. Don’t miss the chance to hear one of the oldest boys’ choirs in Europe—Escolania de Montserrat—before beginning the return trip to Barcelona.

To finish the tour, enjoy the various delicious flavors of the beverages made by the monks, before heading back to Barcelona center.

It was a bit difficult locating the transport, and it was a beautiful ride without having to find the trains etc. Next time maybe the train as it wasn't much time to visit the museum, funicular, and the cathedral.

This was a great way to visit as you have the choice of a guided tour or to go it alone, which we did. Plenty of time and great to get there before the crowds and get back for 1.00pm

Pick up was not at specified location. We searched for 30 minutes trying to find operator. Their bus had no signage to assist in locating them. The guide was not at all clear/helpful. No microphone so very difficult to hear. No overview of the days tour. Guide gave no instructions. Guide should have known that the funicular was not operating instead of telling us we could buy tickets. Bus was freezing cold. Drop off was in a different spot from pickup. For people with mobility issues the additional half km walk was excruciating. One of the worst tours we have ever done.
