What you can expect

Start with pickup from Pollonia or Adamas in the morning, or meet at the Milos Mining Museum for the first activity of the day. Here, you will take a tour with your guide of the museum, seeing its Obsidian collection. Walk through exhibits and photographs that showcase the impressive geological particularities of Milos. Learn more about the history of mining on the island through the other exhibits.

Next stop are the salt fields of the island. Learn about the history of the fields and about the importance of the port of Kanava from the Middle Ages up until the 20th century. Afterwards, travel south to the Crater of Fyriplaka, with its century-old cedar trees. Pass through the steep entrance of the crater and continue down a road that leads to a clearing right in the center of the crater, where the old cedar trees abide.

Travel next to the Sulphur Mines, one of the most famous sights of the island. When the mines were operational, the miners had created an almost completely independent community until it was abandoned abruptly in the 1950s. Wander the imposing site, with the gaping entrance to the mines and the abandoned houses and ruins of the miners’ community. This is a unique stop as the site is not easily accessible with a regular vehicle.
*Access to the Sulphur Mines depends on the condition of the road.

Heading north, you will next visit the largest active open cast bentonite mine in the world, the Aggeria Mine and the modern mineral processing factory. The tour will end back in Pollonia or Adamas, having taken you through every stage of the geological history of this unique volcanic island.
