Overview

Our tours begin at the Chaurasta on Darjeeling Mall Road at 9 AM. We embark on a walk to the Darjeeling Himalayan Mountaineering Institute, featuring the Tenzing Norgay Everest Museum, which is approximately 1.5 kilometres away. After visiting the museum, we continue on a nature walk, passing through a local cultural village that offers picturesque views, about 4 kilometres ahead. Following this, we stop by the Tibetan Refugee Centre in Darjeeling. This centre, founded on October 2, 1959, serves as a rehabilitation facility for Tibetan refugees who fled Tibet with the Dalai Lama. Our journey then leads us to the Bhutia Busty Monastery, also known as Karma Dorjee Chyoling Monastery, which is a Buddhist establishment. Originally a branch of the Kagyupa sect's Phodang Monastery in Sikkim, it was relocated to Darjeeling in 1879. We then head back to Mall Road, enjoying a gentle uphill walk spanning about 2 kilometres over the course of an hour, concluding the tour at Chaurasta Mall Road.

Bhutia Busty Gompa Monastery

Considering the history of all Darjeeling’s monasteries, Bhutia Busty (meaning Bhutia colony) has perhaps the most tumultuous. Spanning about 250 years, the various buildings and locations of Bhutia Busty have faced numerous difficulties, though continues to persevere until this day. The original location of BhutiaBusti rested on Observatory Hill, where the Mahakal Temple is located today. It was built in 1761 by Lama DorjeRinzing. If you consider its origin on Observatory Hill, Bhutia Busty is the oldest monastery in Darjeeling. Unfortunately, the monastery was completely destroyed during the 1815 Gorkha Invasion. It was rebuilt in 1861 but due to troubles it was moved to its present location 18 years later in 1879. Again, the monastery was demolished in 1934 due to a powerful earthquake. It was rebuilt shortly thereafter and has fortunately maintained its structure since then. get a chance to talk one on one with the head monk!
