From quality powder to superb views and miles of cross-country tracks, Ylläs is a ski lover's dream. The spectacular winter playground is nestled in Finnish Lapland and comprises two ski resorts and two villages located on the northern and southern sides of the Ylläs Fell. Slalom down a large network of slopes, ski through forests and go dog sledding across ice-hardened lakes.
Winter sport fans should waste no time getting their goggles on at either Ylläs Ski Resort or Sport Resort Ylläs. There are 63 runs between them, including Jättipitkä. At 1.9 miles (3 kilometres) this lays claim to being the longest ski slope in Finland.
Travel across 205 miles (330 kilometres) of cross-country trails, of which 23.6 miles (38 kilometres) are illuminated at night. If you prefer to use a little less energy, go on a husky or reindeer expedition. Take your seat on a comfy sled and enjoy the scenic splendour as you glide past snow-dusted pines and vast frozen lakes. See if you can spot lynxes and wolverines during your trip. You can also get close to reindeer by visiting a traditional reindeer herder.
Cover more ground on an exhilarating snowmobile tour. Learn the basics with your guide before setting off into the white wilderness together. Park and try a spot of ice fishing.
For even more frosty fun, visit the nearby Lainio Snow Village. This is recreated every winter using colossal amounts of ice and snow. Spend a night in the snow hotel, enjoy a drink in the ice bar and admire the ingenuity and creativity of the ice sculptures.
To experience Ylläs’s social scene, visit the bars and restaurants in the villages of Äkäslompolo and Ylläsjärvi.
Reach Ylläs by flying into the airport at Kittila, about 24.9 miles (40 kilometres) from Ylläsjärvi village and 34 miles (55 kilometres) from Äkäslompolo. You can also come by bus or train from several destinations in Finland. When you arrive, cherish the outdoor way of life, gorgeous views and multitude of snow-based activities.
