A good way to experience the park is by going for a morning walk. You’ll see locals perfecting their tai chi and kung fu moves or doing Qi gong warm-up exercises. Other walkers and joggers will join you on the curving pathways that span the parkland. You might see locals gathering to practice traditional dances and songs. Beneath the shade of the osmanthus trees, older gentlemen regularly meet to play cards on the tables. In the afternoons, students come to the park to practice speaking English aloud. Strike up a conversation with a student and exchange a brief English-tutoring session for some local recommendations.
If you feel like getting some exercise, follow the path that winds up toward the Xilang Shan hilltop from the children’s playground. Admire the stunning panorama from the small pagoda situated on the hilltop. Bring a picnic to enjoy in the pretty pagoda and take photographs of the views. The leafy peak offers a different perspective of the town, showing how urban development has built up around the karst peaks. Continue to the back of the hill to reach a staircase that will take you to the summit of a karst mountain. Be sure to bring plenty of water and wear sturdy shoes if you intend to take on this challenging trail.
Yangshuo Park is located on the town’s western border. It is easy to reach via public bus. Alternatively, reach the park on foot from the nearby hub of West Street. The park is free to visit and open daily. Visit Yangshuo Park for a vigorous morning walk or a pleasant afternoon stroll.
