Stroll through the avenues and palaces of this historic academic institution, which has fostered two centuries of learning in Poland.

Warsaw University is the city’s premier educational institution. Tens of thousands of students are enrolled in this modern intellectual hub, which encompasses many historic buildings. Wander among the neoclassical structures of its campus and explore the long promenades, elegant courtyards and manicured gardens.

The university was founded in 1816 and has an impressive list of famous alumni that includes such esteemed figures as Frédéric Chopin, Joseph Rotblat and David Ben-Gurion. During World War II, the grounds were used as German military barracks and many of the buildings here were destroyed.

Today, the peaceful campus gives visitors the opportunity to engage with Poland’s smart and energized youth. Observe the students attending their lectures and classes or studying outdoors on sunny days.

Walk through the grounds of the central campus and look for gorgeous structures such as the Baroque Uruski Palace. Other noteworthy buildings here include the Old Library, which faces onto an elegant garden and the enormous Kazimierzowski Palace. Built as a royal villa in the 17th century, Kazimierzowski Palace is the oldest building in the complex and the seat of the rector’s office. Head inside to browse a museum dedicated to the university’s history.

Warsaw is a city full of monuments to famous heroes yet on the university grounds, it is a humble student that is honored with a bronze cast. Sit next to this bronze figure on the bench and bask in the sun.

Marvel at the edgy architecture of the Warsaw University Library. Admire the greenery creeping up its façade and ascend to the lush rooftop gardens. Sit among the exotic plants and enjoy expansive views across Warsaw.

Warsaw University has several buildings across the city, but the central campus near Old Town is the most important section. From here, it’s just a short walk to the lovely Saxon Gardens and the charming boulevard of Nowy Świat. Remember, one of the perks of visiting a university is that you’ll find lots of affordable places to eat and drink.
