Teatro del Giglio is a beautiful neoclassical theatre in Lucca. Enjoy the old-world atmosphere of the plush auditorium and learn about its lengthy history. This theatre stages opera performances and plays year-round as well as children’s shows, workshops and training sessions for kids.
The theatre has been in existence since 1600 though it was only given its own dedicated building in 1675. The original building, known as the Teatro Pubblico (Public Theatre), was destroyed by fire in 1688. Italian architect Giovanni Lazzarini was later tasked with designing the new neoclassical theatre, which was inaugurated in 1819.
The theatre’s programme is split up into themed seasons, including the Lyrical, Prose and Dance seasons. During spring and fall, “aperitif concerts” are held on Sunday mornings. The schedule of performances often features works by Lucca’s esteemed hometown composer, Puccini. Check the theatre’s website to find out what’s showing during your trip.
The theatre’s library holds about 4,000 volumes and 75 periodical titles as well as a unique collection of video recordings, which document many of the performances staged here from 1985 on. Visit on a Monday, Tuesday or Thursday afternoon when the library is open to the public.
Stroll around the surrounding Piazza Napoleone, a main square and popular meeting point in Lucca. This piazza occasionally hosts summer music concerts. Look for the stately Palazzo Ducale, which faces out onto the square. Other attractions here include an exquisite 11th-century Cathedral of St. Martin. Admire the wooden crucifix inside, which is said to have been carved by the Biblical figure Nicodemus, and the cathedral’s elegant bell tower.
This historic theatre is near excellent restaurants and bars in central Lucca. Eat a pre-theatre meal of traditional Italian home-style cooking paired with exceptional wines. Try tortelli lucchese, a meat-filled pasta served with ragu, one of the town’s most famous dishes. Central Lucca also has a number of small cocktail and wine bars with peaceful outdoor seating for a post-show drink.
