São Pedro do Boldró Fort is an 18th-century fortification system and lookout point offering stunning views of the island’s northern coastline. Crumbling stone walls serve as a reminder of the fort that exchanged fire with its rival São João Baptista Fort to the west. Climb down to its namesake beach, which is a surfing hotspot at high tide with consistently large waves.

Wander through the overgrown grass for a close look at the ruins of the fortress. Imagine life here in the 1700s, when the fortress was in full glory. It was initially built in a trapezoidal shape with three batteries for defense. Note that it was accessible via a drawbridge.

Learn how it was reconstructed and restocked with artillery in the middle of the 19th century, before falling into disrepair at the start of the 1900s. Listen to the intriguing history of the island, which has many fortifications. It has been occupied by the Dutch, the French and the Portuguese.

Today, the fort is a popular spot for tourists due to its rich history and panoramic views of the rugged coastline. Spot Dois Irmãos Hill, which consists of two rocky hills that rise from the shallow ocean water. Enjoy a picnic at the viewpoint and wait for the sun to descend beyond the horizon, forming an eclipse behind the twin peaks. Listen to light guitar music and grab a drink at the clifftop bar.

Descend to the beach and amble over pebbles and a long stretch of sand at low tide. Walk out into the shallow sea and swim in the warm, clear water. Admire the imposing green cliffs that slope from the back of the beach.

Stay at one of the hotels and posadas that lie just a short walk from the fort. Visiting the ruins is free they remain open at all times.

Find the São Pedro do Boldró Fort in the western outskirts of Vila dos Remédios on the northern coast of the island. It overlooks its eponymous beach, which is between Cacimba do Padre Beach and Conceicão Beach.
