Visit a museum dedicated to a flood that nearly destroyed this Idahoan town or venture to the city outskirts to see the effects of the huge volcano it is built on.

In just over a century, Rexburg, a small town close to the entrance to Yellowstone National Park, has lived through a turbulent history. Learn about the floods and volcanoes that have shaped the landscape around this charming Idahoan town. Rexburg has a population of around 25,000, but its close-knit community makes it feel much smaller.

As in much of the state, the Church of Latter Day Saints has a large presence many pilgrims make the journey to Rexburg to see its stunning temple. Find Brigham Young University in the downtown area. Many of the town’s cultural activities take place close to this renowned school.

Head to the centre of town to sample local cuisine. Idaho is a largely agricultural area. Most dishes centre on seasonal crops and fresh produce, potatoes and much more. While you’re in the downtown area, visit the Teton Dam Flood Museum to learn about the flood that nearly destroyed Rexburg in 1976 and the innovative techniques used to rebuild the town.

Explore the land surrounding Rexburg, which features some of Idaho’s most impressive natural landscapes. Built in part on a shield volcano, Rexburg is surrounded by lava fields. Drive west of town to observe the effects of an eruption nearly 2,000 years ago or visit the Craters of the Moon National Monument to see more recent remnants of an eruption. Drive a bit farther and you’ll reach St. Anthony Dunes. The towering mounds of sand mark the entrance to Yellowstone National Park, one of North America’s most popular national parks.

Arrive in Rexburg by bus or by driving from nearby cities. While there is no major airport in Rexburg, the extensive network of U.S. highways provides a great way to see the landscape unfold before your eyes. Once you’re in town you’ll have no problem finding street parking throughout Rexburg. Accommodation is plentiful, with hotels, motels and serviced apartments available.
