Pizzo Beach

Pizzo Beach

Saunter along the enchanting pier and swim in the clean and clear sea of this beach that lies in the shadow of a clifftop castle.

Pizzo Beach is the main sandy strand that runs along the coast of Pizzo. The beach is part of a bay that is known for its long pier offering scenic views of the town and its cliffs. Bring your camera to capture the stunning scenery around this urban beach.

The strand consists of a curved and sheltered cove. Walk along the enchanting Passerella di Pizzo pier that curves out into the bay. Notice how rocks adorn the sides of the pier, helping it to blend in with the natural scenery. Enjoy the views of the quaint buildings atop the jagged cliffs of the bay.

At the top of the rock formation stands the impressive Murat Castle, which was constructed in the 1400s. Take a tour of this Aragonese structure to learn about Napoleon’s brother-in-law, who was executed here by firing squad for treason.

Find a quiet spot on the sand at the foot of the cliffs and enjoy a picnic. Listen to the rush of the waves, as you sunbathe on a hot summer afternoon. Go for a swim in the clear blue-green water of the Tyrrhenian Sea and bring snorkeling gear to follow the range of colorful aquatic creatures swimming below the surface.

Enticing restaurants and bars flank the back of the strand. Try the seafood, pizza and other local and international delicacies available in these establishments. Stay until dusk and watch the darkening hues of the sky at sunset. Access to the beach is free and it remains open to the public at all times.

Pizzo Beach skirts the main part of Pizzo’s historic center in the region of Calabria. Consider driving and leaving your car in the parking lot beside the pier. See nearby highlights, including the Maria SS Immaculate Conception Church, the Monumento ai Caduti and the Palazzo Musolino.
