The Palacio de Gobierno is Guadalajara’s government building, which housed the Mexican parliament in the 19th century. Visit this historic site where Mexico’s leaders worked and passed prominent laws, such as the abolition of slavery. Discover famous paintings and stroll through the large baroque-style halls and staircases.
Admire the building’s baroque façade, which was constructed in 1774. Marvel at the fascinating murals by renowned Mexican artist José Clemente Orozco. At the top of the main staircase, examine his acclaimed portrait of Mexican freedom fighter Miguel Hidalgo. The Palacio de Gobierno is where Hidalgo issued his decree abolishing slavery in 1810. The famous mural depicts Hidalgo wielding a fiery torch against dark shadows. Take a look at some of Orozco’s original sketches and first drafts.
Climb the stairs to the Congress Chamber to view another set of murals by Orozco. The palace and its works of art remain in top condition. Relax on one of the benches beside the palace in view of the imposing façade. Visit the area at night to see the façade and clock tower beautifully illuminated. Amble around the spacious open-air plaza at the centre of the building. Admire its colonial columns and arches and enjoy the fresh air as you walk past trees and grassy areas.
In 1858, the Palacio de Gobierno served as the headquarters of President Benito Juárez’s short-lived federal government during Mexico’s turbulent Reform War. Today, the building houses state government offices.
The palace is open to the public Monday to Friday from morning until evening. Entry is free and you can take tours with an English-speaking guide. The Palacio de Gobierno is located in Guadalajara’s historic centre, towards the north of the city. It is walking distance from the Guadalajara Cathedral and the Teatro Degollado. The palace is easy to reach by tram from the Plaza Universidad stop. Combine your visit with a tour of the Plaza de la Liberación and the Plaza de Armas nearby.
