Newry is a city of twocounties: its west half of Newry is situated in ambientCountyArmagh and its eastern half lies in timeless CountyDown. United by the 19th century town hall that traverses abridge crossing the river Clanrye, the historic divide between the two counties, this Northern Irish city is one of the country’sfastest growing tourist destinations.

It may be one of Ireland’soldest cities, but Newry blends a fascinating pastwith contemporary modern attractions. It is home to a premium shopping district, quirky cafes and trendy bars. There are some truly fine restaurants dotting thebanks of Newry Canal and architecture lovers canfeast their eyes on 1,000 years of historical buildings throughout the town. Newrypromises you an unforgettable visit.

The Finest Shops in Northern Ireland

Withtwo premium commercial shopping centres, as well as local independent traders alongthe shore of the canal, there’s something for every shopper. Visit the ButtercraneCentre and The Quays, Newry’s two large retail and leisure complexes, andyou’ll be in good company as these draw crowds from all over Ireland. Why notcheck out Newry’s boutique shops and variety market too? They offer thefreshest local produce and unique handcrafted goods.

WhyNot Dine Out in Newry?

FromFrench bistros to Chinese takeaways, why not try one of its delectableeateries? Peppering the cobbled streets alongside the river and canal, Newry’scentral district has a surprisingly continental feel. There are a great numberof gastro pubs in the area too, serving locally reared lamb and otherdelicacies to delight any diner.

Marvel at Newry’s Architecture

With1,000 years of history there’s an eclectic mix of architecture to be found, frommodern accomplishments – such the Newry’s contemporaryTrain Station – to Georgian townhouses in the centre. Why not visit Newbury’s12th century Cistercian Abbey? If nothing else, the city’s architecture isremarkable purely for its diversity. It’s rare to find somewhere with so muchof its early archaeological heritage intact.

Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty in Newry

No trip to the Emerald Isle would be completewithout a jaunt in the country. Newry is close to twodesignated areas of outstanding natural beauty. The MourneMountain range in County Down isone of the largest granite mountain ranges in Ireland, with a multiplicity ofactivities and wildlife. You could also visit the Ring of Gullion,in County Armargh that is host to the SlieveGullion natural forest, and dates back to the pre-Christian era.

Decent hotel overall
"The staff are friendly but I had an issue with the shower being lukewarm to cold which was very disappointing when you stay at a hotel. I didn’t have a shower because the water was not warm enough. The food is good. On my previous stay the shower was just fine but at this time wasn’t and they didn’t ..."

"Lovely hotel with great views. The room was large, bed large and very comfy, and bathroom large and well equipped. We didn't get a chance to go to the spa but had a pleasant walk around the grounds which are well sign-posted."

Donald

I enjoyed an inexpensive light lunch of Latvian Chicken Soup, Fresh Salad Sandwich and Pot of Tea in the "Romantic Restaurant" very near Newry Bus Station. I found the Newry people very friendly and more than helpful when I asked directions, etc.
