Watch mountain peaks reflected in calm water and enjoy recreational activities, such as canoeing and hiking, at this picturesque lake.

Manzanita Lake is one of the major highlights at the main tourist area of Lassen Volcanic National Park. Enjoy camping, hiking and participating in water sports while surrounded by pristine mountain countryside. The clean, natural and safe environment of Manzanita Lake makes it an attraction suitable for all ages.

A great way to see the lake is to follow the 1.5-mile-long (2.4-kilometer) Manzanita Lake Trail. The route is flat and has abundant shade cast by pine and willow trees. On the eastern shoreline are excellent views of 8,530-foot-tall (2,600-meter) Chaos Crags and 10,457-foot-tall (3,187-meter) Lassen Peak. Notice the peak’s mirror image in the water when the sun shines. Be alert for wildlife, including deer, waterfowl and woodpeckers.

Get an alternative view of the scenic landscapes by gliding across the lake. Canoes, catarafts, kayaks and paddleboards are available for rent at the Manzanita Lake Camper Store. You can also launch your own non-motorized boat if you have one. Go for a swim at the beach areas.

Stay overnight at the lake’s campgrounds, which open from May until the winter snowfall. There are about 180 tent sites, made up of pre-bookable and first-come, first-served areas. The grounds feature food lockers, paid showers, potable water and washrooms. If you prefer, spend the night in one of the furnished bunkhouses or cabins.

The lake sits in the northwest corner of Lassen Volcanic National Park. Get here by driving along the Lassen Volcanic National Highway, a 30-mile (48-kilometer) road that traverses the park. Park for free in the car park outside the Loomis Ranger Station. There is a fee to access the national park.

Several attractions close to Manzanita Lake make your visit here even more rewarding. The Loomis Museum has exhibits about the park’s history, a bookstore and ranger-led activities. Have fun with interactive nature exhibits at the Discovery Center. Walk the short trail around Reflection Lake.
