Nature has created its own spectacular artworks at Jusangjeollidae. These pillar-shaped rock formations on the south coast of Jeju Island date back between 14,000 and 25,000 years, when the eruption of Mount Halla ejected plumes of molten lava into the Sea of Jungmun. The cooling effect of the sea water on the white-hot lava created these extraordinary columns of different shapes and sizes, which have been further sculpted by the movements of earth and water over the centuries.
The site is of special scientific interest and has also been listed as a cultural monument. A network of observation decks and signposted paths allow the formations to be admired from many different angles. However, the best view is from the top of the cliff, framed by the crashing waves below.
Jusangjeollidae is on the must-visit list of many keen photographers for its striking natural beauty. The shimmering blue ocean contrasts magnificently with dark cliffs that glisten with spray, while the cylinders and hexagons of the rocks themselves cast unusual shadows as the sun follows its daily arc through the sky. Many people bring a picnic and settle down to admire the ever-changing views.
Jusangjeollidae is around 20 minutes by bus to Jungmun from the Seogwipo terminal, followed by a walk of around 15 minutes to reach the cliffs. There is no charge to walk along the cliffs. Visitors are advised to be cautious at all times as there are steep drops in places. Boats can be hired to view the rock formations from the water, but the sea can be very rough along this stretch of coastline so it is advisable to seek local advice about conditions before setting out.
