A holiday in Hillerød offers renaissance architecture, active entertainment and lush scenery. A place to relax and enjoy in the capital of northern Zealand.

Probably Hillerød’s biggest attraction and the focal point of the town is also one of the top three most attractive castles in northern Europe – Frederiksborg Slot. This renaissance gem was built by Christian IV in the 17th century in fantastic surroundings overlooking its own lake. The castle was damaged by fire in 1859 that destroyed the Riddersalen, but was rebuilt and is now a national history museum. At the Nationalhistoriske Museum, the entire family can learn about 500 years of Denmark’s history through paintings, furniture and portraits. Special exhibitions, Sunday guided tours and special theme days guarantee a rewarding visit for adults and children alike.

Frederiksborg Slotshave, the impressive renaissance gardens, are a large element of the experience. This extensive recreational area is perfect for garden enthusiasts who will no doubt be delighted to experience the transition from baroque to romantic. When the Barokhaven’s closely cropped grass and winding hedges are featured in the Indelukket’s meandering paths and natural shrubs, it doesn't get much better. Admire the idyllic landscape from the charming café in the gardens, with indoor and outdoor serving.

After a day in the castle, it’s time to eat! In the heart of Hillerød on the cobbled Torvet square are lots of great restaurants offering the best in culinary art for any taste. Dine on anything from juicy steaks to Italian specialities whilst enjoying the view of the castle and its gardens.

Ever wondered what an acoustic gallery looks like? See the answer in Hillerød! Cisternen – a subterranean exhibition and concert venue – provides a unique experience with exhibits in the form of light and movement art for example. Cisternen is open every weekend.

If you are staying in Copenhagen, a drive to Hillerød for a weekend break takes just over 30 minutes or you can get there by train in around 45 minutes. There are also lots of train connections to reach Hillerød from other parts of the country, often changing at Copenhagen central. If you’re flying, the town is easily accessed from Copenhagen Airport.

Try something different, enjoy a regional market town and delight in a castle with a stunning interior and idyllic surroundings that simply take your breath away.
