The bustling capital of Mexico’s Sonora state is famous for its colonial architecture and museums, baseball and steak.
Often called the City of the Sun, Hermosillo is a lively city with a wealth of family-friendly activities. Its attractions range from a legacy of colonial architecture and cultural centres to impressive viewpoints and one of Mexico’s finest baseball teams.
Start your visit at picturesque Plaza Zaragoza, home to colonial-era landmarks such as the Catedral de Asunción and Palacio de Gobierno, which has murals depicting Sonora’s history. See more colonial architecture along Calle Comonfort and learn about regional culture at the Museo de Culturas Populares e Indígenas de Sonora.
South of the city centre is the excellent Museo de Arte de Sonora (MUSAS). Attend its art expositions, film screenings and concerts dedicated to the promotion of Mexican culture. Enjoy shopping, visit a casino or watch the latest Hollywood movies at Galerias Mall.
Hermosillo has plenty of outdoor attractions too. Walk, bike or take a taxi to the summit of Cerro de la Campana and marvel at the panoramic city views. Relax in tree-lined Jardin Juarez and Parque Madero. Ride waterslides at Parque Recreativo La Sauceda and try the interactive exhibits of La Burbuja children’s museum.
For live spectator sport, visit the Estadio Hector Espino, home of the Hermosillo Naranjeros, one of Mexico’s strongest baseball clubs. Matches generally take place from October through January.
Don’t miss the opportunity to sample Hermosillo’s famous steak, a product of Sonora’s cattle-farming heritage. Restaurants such as Sonora Steak will cut and weigh your steak to order at your table.
Hermosillo is about a 3-hour drive south of the Mexico-USA border and has an international airport that receives regular flights from major Mexican and U.S. cities. Get around using the low-cost buses and taxis, especially during the scorchingly hot summer months. Hermosillo is a safe city to visit, although normal precautions should be taken if walking after dark. The city is also a gateway to coastal resorts on the Gulf of California, such as Kino Bay.
