Château de Pommard

Housed in two impressive castles, this famous Burgundy winery offers specialized tours of the vines and the grounds, as well as tastings.

Once a favorite vacation destination for Napoleon, the Château de Pommard is one of the grande dames of Burgundy’s many wine producers. It is a union of two châteaus, the oldest of which was founded in 1726. The vineyard is worth visiting as much for its architecture, mixing neoclassicism and Regency, as for its famous AOC pinot noirs. Sample wines in the tasting room or set off on an adventure learning about the process and regulations that make Burgundies one of the world’s most famous wines.

Check in at the winery’s Welcome Desk. If you’ve purchased one of the “Wine Experiences,” the friendly and knowledgeable sommeliers will take you on your tour, which can be conducted in English. Walk among the vines as they explain the geology and soil science behind different wines. Take a lesson in the basics of sommelier training, from food pairings to proper serving temperatures. Follow your children on a tour of how wine is created, from grape to final product. Be sure to explore the awe-inspiring cellars, under whose arched ceilings are over 300,000 bottles of wine and hundreds of caskets as well as historical winemaking equipment.

Step into the tasting room, where the magic of the Château de Pommard becomes more apparent. Sip the region’s famous pinot noirs, grown here. Try biodynamic wines, an environmental initiative started a few years ago by the new owner, or stay with more classic vintages. Buy a few bottles to take home or ship, or simply stroll back into the sunshine, lingering in the French-style gardens before heading into Pommard for a meal or more tastings.

Château de Pommard is located at the edge of the tiny village of Pommard, a 10-minute drive or pleasant hour-long walk from nearby Beaune. Cycle to the vineyards in 15 minutes from Beaune’s Old Town. Limited free parking is available at the site. Wine experiences are offered daily from morning to evening, with reduced days and slightly shortened hours during winter. Reservations are required for “Wine Experiences,” which vary in price depending on the service provided. The tasting room is open for walk-in customers during business hours.
