Bask in the serenity and the bright interior of this elegant cathedral near the water’s edge in Ischia Ponte.

The Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta is a subtle yet beautiful building that adds to the authentic atmosphere and historic value of the island of Ischia.

Tucked away in the narrow streets of Ischia Ponte, it is easy to miss the yellow-and-white Baroque façade of the cathedral if you are not careful. Pause a moment to glance up at the ornate façade before stepping through the wrought iron gate and into the building itself.

As you enter, ponder the long, tumultuous history of this religious site. A simple church was first built here in 1388 by Pietro Cossa and dedicated to Santa Maria Della Scala. The current church was built in 1751 before being converted into a cathedral in 1810 after the destruction of the island’s previous cathedral in a battle.

Admire the fascinating figures that support the little baptismal font that stands inside to the left as you enter.

Absorb the serene ambience that this cathedral seems to exude. The bright, white interior gives it a heavenly, welcoming character. To see how this was achieved, just look up at the domes of the three naves, with the windows of the central dome drawing in most of the daylight. Designed in the Baroque style, the ornate white stucco still has the crisp and detailed finish it has always had.

Stroll through the church to take in the elegant details of its architecture and ornaments, such as the glossy marble floor, laid in 1912. The cathedral is also home to many fine 18th-century paintings from Alfonso di Spigna and Giacinto Diano. Be sure to check out the more than 700-year-old crucifix and the venerated panel painted with an icon of the Madonna. The latter was rescued from a local castle that had fallen under siege and was mostly destroyed.

The Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta is centrally located in Ischia Ponte and is best reached on foot or by public transportation. While publicly accessible on most days, holy services such as Mass on Sunday are best avoided if you wish to have a good look around.
