Visit the beautifully restored Castello del Boccale and enjoy the wild scenery of this rocky coast. Take a swim in the clear waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea and capture the dramatic landscape of Il Cala dei Pirati (The Pirate’s Cove).
Castello del Boccale is one of several historic fortifications and watchtowers dotted along the coast road south of Livorno. These defence structures once protected the region from pirates. As you drive along the oceanfront, you’ll be treated to gorgeous views of the blue Mediterranean waters, pink rocks and cliffs covered in vegetation.
Upon arrival, admire the rectangular castle with its two rows of windows and three round tower. The castle was originally built as a watchtower for the powerful Medici family in the 16th century, but was transformed into a neo-medieval residence at the end of the 19th century. A more recent restoration turned it into a comfortable apartment building. Adjacent to it stands a square tower, which is a relatively new addition.
Make your way over to the rocky outcrops just to the south where you can get the best views of the scenic castle and its Mediterranean backdrop. Make the most of this quiet and secluded area and enjoy a picnic in the outdoors. On a hot day, take a dip into the clear waters and snorkel around to admire the marine life. It is worthwhile waiting for sunset, to capture the changing sky on camera, with the castle as the centerpiece.
Castello Del Boccale is located just over 5.5 miles (9 kilometres) south of Livorno. To get there from Livorno you can catch a bus or drive a rental car. The trip takes about 15 minutes and winds along the coast. The area around the castle is public property, but you can’t enter the building due to it being a private residence.
Consider pairing a visit to this castle with a trip to nearby Castello Sonnino, which is located 1.8 miles (2.9 kilometres) south of Castello Del Bocale. A bus service operates between both sites.
