The Cascada de Roberto Barrios is a lovely waterfall visited by both tourists and locals. Some people prefer it to other falls in the area due to its less crowded conditions and fewer souvenir vendors. Make a dive, sightsee and spend the day surrounded by nature and the powerful sound of water falling into a blue natural pool.
The falls are not as high as in other similar spots near Palenque, but what makes Roberto Barrios special is how numerous the falls are. Discover five different waterfalls and choose your favorite to go for a swim and play in the water. Join local residents in the third pool as they tend to use it as a relaxing spa. You’ll find people from all walks of life having a break from work, families escaping the humidity of the day with a refreshing splash and local children playing around. Hike from one fall to the next and explore the area to see lush vegetation and little caves, some of which are under the water.
Pack a picnic for lunch and enjoy it surrounded by nature. Alternatively, you’ll find a restaurant just across the road. After indulging yourself in the water, visit the old church nearby and buy a souvenir from one of the local vendors.
There is an entry fee to access the waterfalls. You can also hire young local boys as tour guides. They can give you great tips regarding safe places to jump into the water and special spots to take stunning photos. This is also a way of supporting the people in the area, as they share the money they earn with the whole community.
Reach Roberto Barrios waterfalls by road. They are located about 20 miles (32 kilometers) from the center of the town of Palenque. Take a colectivo (local bus) from the city or join an organized tour. The drive has some amazing views of Chiapas’ landscape, with beautiful tropical green and gray mountain ranges.
